Equine 999
Yesterday when I went to Mumblies to pick up Stinky after I had been at work for 24 hours she pointed out of the window at the yard. Standing outside the stables was a pitiful sight. The Gentleman stood, head hanging, his eyes dull and body twitching clearly in pain.
The vet came and checked him out. Gave him an injection and said that he should be fine. ..... Mumbly called the vet back a couple of hours later saying that he really wasnt fine and could he be seen again.
The vet came back and gave him a much larger injection and said that really he should go to the equine hospital at Newmarket to be seen as they had more diagnostic equipment and an operating room....should the Gentleman need it.
He did need it. When we got to Newmarket after pushing The Gentleman into the box and then out again the other end, the vet did a detailed examination and diagnosed colic.
He needed surgery to release part of his small intestine that had almost gone back on itself (telescoped) and created a blockage that starved the rest of his gut of a proper blood supply, and therefore if left untreated the small intestine would die and rot and cause even more pain and a result that no-one would have been happy with.
This morning Gentleman Jed is ok. He has had the sugery and has various tubes in him and has to be in the hospital for about a week before coming home for further recoperation. It will take about 6 weeks before he is back to his usual self.
Poor little thing!....He seemed to shrink when he was in pain and by the time we left him in the capable hands of the veterinary hospital he was truely tiny. He was all sweaty and small and in such pain.
Small and I shall go and see him tomorrow.
