A Need.

I wanted to tell you about something I saw when on the way back from the 1950's at christmas. I was reminded of it yesterday.

I got on the plane at the airport. It was a 'big plane' seating around 100 people and it was pretty much full. As I looked around while seating myself and very firmly strapping myself in and getting out a newspaper to distract myself from the fact that I would be off the ground and in someone elses control and could, at any moment drop from the sky and die in a horrific downward spiral splat type fashion. .....anyway...moving on.... it struck me, as looking round that the vast majority of passengers were men. Really, there were hardly any women on board at all.

Excelent!!!!
There were the business types with their brief cases and broad sheet newspapers, working hard and probably work commuting from the past into now....(with their bank accounts clearly in the past system)
There was the men that had clearly gone back to the 1950's for christmas to see their folks and were now going back to the real world, and very clearly relieved to be out of parental control, I had heard them on their mobiles before getting on the plane talking to friends and partners about what they had done while in the 50's and how they wanted to get good and drunk and behave badly when they got back to the here and now.
And there were the ageless almost invisible type men, that would fit in anywhere without anyone, except those who love them, noticing.

Anyway, all the women on the flight were completely ignored by all these men. (bastards!!)
Every single man that I could see were staring at one woman.
Who was holding a 3 month old baby.
As I watched, it was the baby every one of the men was staring at.
It was a very pretty baby, and it did look very cute in a pale pink coat and cream tights..(thats all you could see) and the baby did grin enticingly at anyone that caught her eye, and men were putty in her hands. They were turning round and smiling at it, and nudging those who may not have seen the baby to point it out..... (really there was no need, the entire male population of the flight was staring at it!!!)

On the faces of these many men who couldnt help the mother of this baby enough and were smiling fondly at the very small person was a hunger. A yearning. A need.

It really stood out. Mostly we think that women look at babies that way. I dont think that I have ever been aware of these expressions on mens faces. Last night I was reminded of this when talking to a male friend of a friend about what they wanted from life. And he said how much he wanted children. Really wanted them. And there was that look on his face.

Maybe its not, as much as I thought, a female thing. I think it would be interesting to maybe ask more men, who dont have children, if they want them....(without sounding like I will provide them!! )...to see the expression on their faces when they answer.
